A committee of Lambton County Council is recommending the speed limit on Oil Heritage Rd. through Oil City be reduced from 70 km/h to 50 km/h.
Enniskillen Township Mayor Kevin Marriott says a petition with over 60 signatures was presented to the committee Wednesday.
"Some of the residents that live along that stretch didn't feel 100% safe. One individual actually had somebody leave the road and hit their house a year ago," says Marriott. "There's been other close calls as well. Every other hamlet in the county pretty much has a lower speed limit than what is there."
Marriott says the current 70 km/h speed limit makes it tough for residents to make turns onto side streets and says there's the risk of sliding off the slippery road in the winter.
A final decision will be made at the next Lambton County Council meeting on November 2.
Staff have also been asked for a report on possibly further reducing the speed limit on Kimball Rd. between Petrolia Line and Rokeby Line.
