Future Brighter For Celebration Of Lights

Some lights will go up this year for the Celebration of Lights in Sarnia.

Board Director Bill Suisham says the community support since announcing the event was cancelled for 2016 has been overwhelming.

He says community groups and businesses have stepped up and at least 20 displays now have sponsors behind them.

'We did make some movement," says Suisham. "I think the word's out there now and I think the initiative is out there, enough groups to fully fix it, not yet, but we're working towards that."

Suisham says they're still in need of financial donations in order to make repairs to some of the displays, including the arch over Front St.

"That arch needs a tremendous amount of work," he says. "It was frozen to the ground in 2014 and ended up having to stay out there for the entire winter so the frame is extremely rusted, there's a lot of light repairs and it even received some damage during snow removal."

A gofundme account has raised just over $600 so far.

He says they're hoping to have the displays that will go up this year at the park by November 5, with the community set up on November 12.
