Centennial Park Reopening Delayed As Costs Rise

The cost of the remediation of Centennial Park has climbed and that could delay the opening of the popular waterfront greenspace.

The latest report from Sarnia city staff shows the cost has jumped by another $800,000 to a total of $11-million because deteriorating pipes for the entire sanitary sewer servicing Seaway and Harbour Rds. meant the entire system had to be replaced.

Undocumented watermains added to the cost and sandy soil in the area necessitated trenches be built twice as wide to keep pipes from collapsing.

The ground kept giving way because large amounts of construction materials and debris were sunk into the ground near the new boat launch site and that all had to be removed at extra cost.

A hydro duct also had to be replaced.

Work crews with Bre-ex Construction will have to work extra hours to try to get as much of the work done by year's end, when construction was supposed to wrap up in November.

The armour-stone wall along the shoreline still has to be built, the land has to be pushed into place, and a geotextile membrane installed to separate contaminated soil from the clean soil cap.
