Sarnia Council Briefs

Sarnia council unanimously approved rezoning bylaw amendments for the use of shipping containers in the city.

A new definition for a shipping container and new regulations for temporary and permanent use of the large prefabricated metal boxes will be added.

Council has also asked staff to outline what the definition of 'modified container' is.

Residents will only be able to store items in residential shipping containers for a maximum 60 days per calendar year.

Stacking them would be banned and only two containers would be allowed per property. -------------------------------

A bylaw designating the property at 112 Maria St. under the Heritage Act. was approved at council's meeting.

The home, commonly referred to as Skilbeck Cottage, was built and named after Robert Skilbeck, one of Sarnia's first businessmen.

In 1847, Sarnia's first money-lending institution was run out of the backroom of the brick house because there was no bank in the city until 1852.

-----------------------------------

Council also directed staff to work with administration at Alexander Mackenzie School to transport students to Centennial Park to help set up displays for the Celebration of Lights.

Transportation will be funded through the Major Events Assistance Fund.

A equal amount is to be included in the 2017 budget so students can return to the park in early January to help tear-down the displays.
