Lambton Perfect For Pilot Project: Warden

Warden Bev MacDougall thinks Sarnia-Lambton would be a good fit for a guaranteed minimum income pilot project.

The provincial government is asking for public input on who should be eligible, what the basic income level should be and what criteria should be established.

MacDougall says this area fits all the criteria and that's why the county has applied.

"They're talking about finding a city or town in southern Ontario that includes a First Nations community," she says. "We are connected to three First Nations communities and we're the right size with the right social service agencies to run the program."

MacDougall also says we have the appropriate social service agencies to run the program.

A discussion paper produced by former senator Hugh Segal recommends a monthly income of $1,320 with another $500 for people with disabilities, to replace the Ontario Works and Ontario Disability Support Program.

The government intends to have a plan ready for the pilot by April 2017.
