The Sarnia Sting defeated the Sault St. Marie Greyhounds 5-2 in OHL action Friday night at Progressive Auto Sales Arena. The win moves the Sting (11-5-1-0) into first place in the West Division, one ahead of Windsor and two up on the Greyhounds (10-6-1-0)
Sault St. Marie jumped out a 2-0 first period lead on a shorthanded goal by Bobby MacIntyre and a powerplay marker off the stick of Morgan Frost. Kevin Spinozzi cut the lead to one with his fourth goal of the season.
Jaden Lindo's shorthanded goal tied the game at 12:44 of the second period. The Sting heated up in the third period with three goals in a four minute span by Nikita Korostelev, Jordan Kyrou and Jeff King.
Sarnia was strong on the powerplay, killing off seven of eight penalties in the game. Anthony Salinitri got into a rare fight against Hayden Verbeek who was handed a two minute penalty for instigating on the play.
The Sting have been hot on home ice with an 8-2-0 record this season, while the Greyhounds are now 8-2-0 on the road.
The Sting were outshot 37-18 overall, including 16-5 in the first period. Justin Fazio made 35 saves and was named the game's third star. Kevin Spinozzi and Nikita Korostelev each had a goal and two assists and were named the first and second stars respectively.
Sarnia returns to action Saturday night in Owen Sound. The puck drops at 7:30pm on 103.9FM-1070AM CHOK.
