New Carriage House To Be Built At Animal Farm

It was built in 1938 as a garage, billiard room and guest room for the Geddes family in Goderich and eventually floated down Lake Huron on a log boom.

Years later, the Carriage House and Log Cabin were given to the city of Sarnia by the Lorne Hay family and eventually ended up near the Children's Animal Farm at Canatara Park.

The Carriage House, showing the ravages of age, will be torn down November 25 and rebuilt, according to Sarnia Seaway Kiwanis Club President Donna Kelso.

"If you take a close look at it, the roof line bows down in front of the door at the front of the building," says Kelso. "It isn't a safety issue right now but it could be in the future, so before it becomes one, we're being proactive and replacing it."

Construction of a new Carriage House will cost $100,000, thanks to the proceeds of the Kiwanis TVBingo, a donation from the Alix Foundation and the generous help of numerous local contractors and businesses.

The new Carriage House should be open next spring. The Animal Farm will remain open during construction.
