Sarnia Fire and Rescue says a Queen St. resident was lucky to escape injury after being found unresponsive in a smoke-filled room Wednesday night.
Firefighters responded to an apartment in the 100-block of Queens St. around 10pm, after a neighbour called 911 after hearing a smoke alarm and smelling smoke.
Public Education Officer Mike Otis says they responded in full gear and found an unconscious person on the living room floor. He says the source of the smoke was an unattended pot on the stove.
"The number one cause of home fires is unattended cooking," says Otis. "So, we always tell people to always pay attention and look when you cook."
Otis says the resident was awakened, and taken into the care of EMS staff.
Fire crews were able to ventilate the unit and avoid any serious damage.
