United Way Reaches Target

With a couple of weeks to spare, the Sarnia-Lambton United Way campaign has reached its $2-million target.

This year's goal was the highest in the campaign's 60-year history.

Campaign Chair Richard Kelch says a number of local campaigns and businesses really helped them hit their biggest goal yet.

"We rely heavily on heavy industry in the community, Shell, Imperial Oil, Lanxess but we were able to get a huge upswing from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the County of Lambton, the City of Sarnia and the boards of education," says Kelch. "Lots of campaigns that really dug deep and re-energized our campaign."

About 3,800 individuals donated to the campaign, which officially wraps up at the end of the year.

Kelch, whose three year run as campaign chair is coming to an end, says it has been a tough year with the economy being depressed and the wildfires in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

"There's been a lot of need for people to spread their charity to and we want to thank the community for recognizing that United Way is able to fund with local donations for local need," he says.

The United Way supports 20 agencies providing 37 youth, family and seniors programs to the community.
