Bayside Mall Development Viable Despite Legal Wrangling

Construction of a new grocery store at Bayside Mall is proceeding, despite legal challenges before the courts.

"The first, was created by the former owner when he caused a number of defaults under the first mortgage. That is starting to be dealt with and I think it will take a couple of weeks," says Bayside Mall 2015 Limited President Gord Laschinger "The second, I bought the shares of the company in December 2015 and then in June of 2016 the former owner comes by and says that they essentially want the shares back. So, he's initiated some process in the courts to see if he can do that and obviously i'm going to resist that process."

Laschinger says that case will likely be a much longer struggle.

"The court challenges are disturbing, but need to be dealt with," he says.

Laschinger says the project remains viable.

"The grocery store is under construction. Innovative Construction Services is working on that and coordinating everything with MIG Engineering and the architects. The work has just started but it's hoped to be complete by early October 2016," he says.

Davy Jones Quality Meats is to be located on the corner of Vidal St. and Cromwell St.

The 8,000 sq ft store will offer a fresh meat department, seafood, bakery, produce, deli and a modest staples selection.
