Annual Mariners' Service Sunday

The Mariners' Service is being held on Sunday at St. Paul's Anglican Church in Pt. Edward.

The inter-faith service is held each year before the start of shipping season on the Great Lakes.

Reverend Kristen Aikman says it's always well-attended.

"It's one that attracts an awful lot of people from our community to come out," says Aikman. "It's a worship service to begin with, there's a luncheon afterwards and the opportunity to explore some of the maritime and naval paraphernalia that we have on display in the church."

Aikman says St. Paul's is often called the Sailors' Church.

From 1868 to 1902, the church's tall, tin steeple reflected light from the Fort Gratiot lighthouse in Port Huron to help ships navigate from Lake Huron into the St. Clair River.

In 1902, St. Paul's moved from the corner of Livingston St. and Victoria St. to its current location at 210 Michigan Ave.

The service gets underway at 10am. Lake Freighter Photographer Mark Dease will be the guest speaker.
