Hiawatha Owner Hopes For A Good Season

The owner of Hiawatha Horse Park is hoping this year sees a continuation of gains made last year.

Jim Henderson says they had great attendance last year and begin this season on May 6, the same Saturday as the Kentucky Derby.

Ontario Racing has extended the contracts of all Ontario tracks to 2021. It's part of a long-term plan that could see the governing contract extended to 2038.

"There's supposed to be a new program coming down and they've hired a bunch of new people to operate it," he says. "Ontario Racing has got a new board. We're supposed to be all linked together and be part of the Ontario horse racing alliance. It will be interesting to see how it all works out."

Hiawatha will have 21 live races this year as well as three simulcasts per week.

Henderson says improvements continue at the facility, including adding two new volleyball courts.

He hopes to hire about 75 part time employees this season.
