Mental Health Advocate Coming To Sarnia

One of Canada's best-known sports broadcasters is coming to Sarnia in the fall.

Michael Landsberg will headline the Bluewater Health Foundation's annual fundraising gala on October 12 at the Dante Club.

Foundation Executive Director Kathy Alexander says Landsberg will be in town for two days, talking to local youth and sharing his personal battle with depression.

"So many people in our community are impacted on a daily basis, we regularly hear bad news and reports about instances happening in our community," says Alexander. "We're really excited to bring someone like Michael to Sarnia, who is one of Canada's leading advocates for mental health."

Landsberg, who has been with TSN since the network's inception in 1984, is founder of the SickNotWeak initiative. It raises awareness about the importance of being open about mental illness, reaching out for help when needed, and reducing the stigma surrounding it.

Alexander says she is pleased he will be able to share his message with local youth.

"We decided it was really important that youth and students in the community have an opportunity to hear Michael's message," she says. "We know not everyone can afford a $250 ticket, but his message is so important that we've partnered with both local school boards, as well as Lambton College, to offer students free workshops with Michael during the day."

Tickets for the gala are $250 and are on sale at the Bluewater Health Foundation office. Funds raised will support Mental Health and Addiction Services at Bluewater Health.
