Pay Your Fines Or Don't Drive

Be forewarned. If you don't pay a municipal bylaw fine, you now will not be able to renew your vehicle licence plate until it's paid.

Sarnia's bylaw enforcement director Alan Shaw says the collection tool now extends to everything from property offences to fines for allowing your dog to run at large.

"There are requirements under the provincial offences act previously that would prevent people from getting their licences if they had outstanding parking tickets," he said. "That has now been extended as of May 1 to include things such as parking tickets and traffic violations and other offences."

Shaw estimates up to 30% of all fines in Sarnia are not being paid.

The province has said Ontario cities are owed about $500-million in unpaid tickets.
