Rain Delays Crops

A very wet spring, including this past weekend, has created problems for area farmers.

Over 3 5mm of rain was recorded at Sarnia's Chris Hadfield Airport last Thursday through Saturday, and considerably more fell in parts of the county.

Lambton Grains Committee Chair Kevin Marriott says freshly planted corn and soybean crops have been washed out and need to be replanted. He says winter wheat crops have also taken a hit.

"There's definitely a lot of ponding, and there will be some damage to the winter wheat that will be coming out in head over the next three weeks," says Marriott. "There was damage but it was somewhat minimal compared to if it occurred a month later."

Marriott says the ground is so saturated, that it will take days or even weeks to dry up.

He says that, combined with frost, will make for a late start to the planting season.
