Pipe Crashes Through Classroom Ceiling

Luckily no one was injured, but a Grade 9 geography class at Sarnia's St. Patrick's High School was certainly startled when a 3 ft pipe came crashing through the ceiling Wednesday morning.

The St. Clair Catholic District School Board says the southwest corner of the building is currently undergoing roof repairs. As a result of the work being done outside, the pipe, which has a diameter of 3 to 4 inches, slipped through the ceiling tiles around 8:40am.

Superintendent of Education Scott Johnson says no students were injured by the pipe.

"The ceiling tile through which it fell was adjacent to a wall and in the corner of the classroom," says Johnson. "As soon as the pipe landed on the floor of the classroom, the teacher removed the students safely to the library and all roof work was immediately stopped and assessed by both board personnel and the roofing contractors -- Bullock Roofing."

He says work will cease until there's a full investigation to determine exactly what happened and to confirm that safe work can resume.

Johnson says they've sent communication home to all parents and staff informing them of the event that took place.
