Q&A with Korey Conroy of the Point Edward Pacers:
Jake Jeffrey: Into your third season, first as captain. Feeling a bit more comfortable now that your a bit older?Korey Conroy: Yes I have, I came out of midget and had to get use to the speed a physicality of junior. First year is definitely a big learning curve, but I've adjusted nicely to the junior game in my second and third season. Now I'm looking to be a leader on the floor and in the dressing room.
JJ: You were named captain ahead of this season, what sort of leadership qualities do you bring to the team?
KC: I try to be a calming voice in the dressing room, you need someone who can lead on and off the floor. Tensions can run high in lacrosse so you need someone who can keep their emotions in check. I also try to be approachable for the other guys in the room so they can come to me if they have any problems.
JJ: How important is it to keep the emotions in check? Lacrosse obviously a very physical sport with plenty of one on one battles.
KC: It's really important, if you want to be a contending team in this league you have to keep your emotions in check. At times in the past we've been a little undisciplined, and you don't win too many games of lacrosse playing like that.
JJ: Tell me about some of those divisional match ups, playing those teams as many times as you do the games tend to be a bit more heated?
KC: You see those guys so much more frequently, and a lot of the guys you grew up playing against so there is a lot of history there. Standings wise, they are definitely the most important games for us throughout the course of the season. We were able to get big win over Windsor which has been a long time coming, but Wallaceburg has been tough this season.
JJ: The Pacers have been rebuilding over the last couple years, with the win totals climbing every year, from where you stand now do you feel like the team is in good shape to make that playoff push?
KC: Absolutely, we aren't clawing from behind which is what we were doing last year after a rough start. Looking at the back half of our schedule there are a lot of teams we match up well against, several games with think we should be able to win.
JJ: You're from Point Edward, so seeing the Pacers back you get to play your home games down the street from where you grew up.
KC: It's been awesome, the arena staff are great to us, they are so accommodating for anything we need throughout the season. It's a great facility, awesome dressing room and the fan support has been awesome. In terms of being close to home it's great, I live right down the street so it doesn't get much better than that. It's been a nice switch from Clearwater Arena, there is a strong sense of community in Point Edward and you can feel it during home games.
