Splash Pad Work Set To Take Off After Killdeer Departure

Construction at Point Edward's Waterfront Park has resumed.

An archaeological dig and the discovery of a killdeer's nest halted work on new buildings and the splash pad last month.

"The birds have flown the coop," says Chief Administrative Officer Jim Burns. "They were gone last Monday. They were still there on the Friday, but were gone Monday morning, so we contacted the archaeological people. They came in and did their work Thursday and everything was cleared, so we're good to go. Hopefully we can move forward now and get things rolling along."

He says nothing out of the ordinary was found by the archaeologists and both contractors returned to the site Tuesday.

Wright General Contactors is building the new field house and pavilion for the park and All Seasons Excavating is working on the splash pad.

"We don't really have a target date now. I would say it's probably going to be closer to the end of July before everything is fully completed. We're still going to have the celebration on the 29th of June because it's all tied in with Canada Day and a couple of other events, so we're still going ahead with that."

Burns says by that time there will be definite signs of a splash pad at the site, as long as the weather cooperates.

"Good things come to those who wait, right? We want to do this once and do it right so, in the long run, the delays give us even more of a chance to make sure it's done properly."

Burns expects the construction delays and archeological work to cost $100,000, and while some additional fundraising is planned, most of the bill will be paid from reserves.

The village received $100,000 in federal funding from the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program to help pay for the project.
