A new pedestrian crossover, commonly referred to as a PXO, is now in place at Sarnia's Centennial Park.
Shell Canada donated $40,000 to the city for new signage at Front St. between Maxwell St. and Nelson St. and for a fully accessible, solar powered transit shelter.
The new pedestrian crossing is the first of its kind in the city.
In the meantime, the Lambton Safe Roads Committee is trying to educate residents about the use of designated PXOs in Sarnia-Lambton.
Chair Kelley Elliott says some drivers and cyclists are still not stopping for pedestrians at crossovers.
"Cycling through a crossover can result in a $110 fine while motorists who do not stop can be fined up to $500 and three demerit points," says Elliott.
Right now, there are PXO crossovers in Point Edward, Petrolia and Grand Bend. One will soon be installed in Warwick.
They have special "Stop For Pedestrian" signs and striped, black and white ladder and triangle markings. Some have push buttons that activate flashing lights.
Pedestrians should signal they want to cross by raising their arm, pointing, or where available, pressing the push button to activate crossover lights. They should also ensure a vehicle stops before entering the roadway.
