Reconstruction of eastbound Hwy. 402 and the Front St. overpass could happen as early as next year.
The Ministry of Transportation says a detailed design and environmental assessment study for the rehabilitation is underway.
MTO West Region Communications Coordinator Liane Fisher says the overhaul will involve repairs to the overall structure and substructure and is required to maintain structural integrity and extend the life of the highway infrastructure.
"This rehabilitation project will include patching the bridge deck, followed by waterproofing and paving the deck, as well as some patches to the bridge barrier walls and some repairs to the bridge abutments," says Fisher.
Passenger vehicle traffic will be re-routed from the border to the Front St. exit ramp and proceed through the traffic signals at Front St. before getting back on the highway. In addition, the Venetian Blvd. connection to the highway will be closed. Commercial vehicles will stay on the truck ramp and will be managed through staged construction.
Fisher the project is estimated to take one construction season to complete.
