Peter Hungerford is retiring after a career in municipal government spanning over 40 years.
Friday will be his last day as Sarnia's Director of Economic Development and Corporate Planning.
He was a senior planner with Lambton County beginning in 1976 and joined the former Sarnia Township a year later as Development Commissioner.
When Sarnia and Clearwater joined in 1991 Hungerford became the amalgamated city's Director of Policy Planning.
"There was good planning done in Sarnia Township and we did a really good job in the transition from basically a rural township to an urban township," says Hungerford. "The amalgamation process was a major accomplishment for both communities. Way back in the 1970's when Bright's Grove was beginning to urbanize, the township was able to acquire the parkland where the Library now sits. We preserved the Faethorne House and subsequently developed the Bright's Grove Library and Art Gallery."
Hungerford says he's also proud of his role in the creation of the Howard Watson nature trail and the acquisition and operation of Chris Hadfield Airport and Sarnia Harbour.
He plans to enjoy cottage life with his wife and spend time with his two new grandchildren.
