School Board To Pursue K to 12 Funding

The Lambton Kent District School Board has decided to stick with its original plan to try to build a kindergarten to grade 12 school in north Lambton.

Public Relations Officer Heather Hughes says trustees have decided to reapply their $17.7-million grant application, even though they've received verbal notice the funding application was unsuccessful this year.

The Board will continue to submit a grant application in future rounds of the process to fund the kindergarten to grade 12 school," says Hughes.

Three elementary schools and North Lambton Secondary would close and relocate at a site yet to be determined.

The board also plans to write the St. Clair Catholic District School Board to see if it's interested on working on solutions to keep rural schools open, possibly by sharing school buildings that students from both boards can utilize.

"Currently we share services through communities of schools and the two boards have had an ongoing great relationship. There are other areas where boards use a shared facility. Our Chair is formulating a letter that will be sent to the Chair of the St. Clair Catholic District School Board."

Enrollment at the Lambton Kent District School Board has dropped by over 14% over the past ten years.

Elementary schools are projected to be at 74% capacity in September while secondary schools will be at 66% capacity.
