Sarnia fire officials have advice for those planning private fireworks displays this long weekend.
Sarnia Fire and Rescue Public Education Officer Mike Otis says children should not handle any fireworks and always have a means of extinguishing a fire on hand.
"You can not set off fireworks on any public land whatsoever, so not in parks or on the street," says Otis. "Anybody doing a private fireworks display takes on all liability for any personal injury, property damage, any damages of any kind."
Otis says there is a bylaw in place for the use of fireworks in the city. The practice is only permitted on holidays and large displays require permits.
Sarnia fire is also reminding residents that the use of sky lanterns is never permitted due to the inability to control where they travel and more importantly, where they will land.
