The future of Sarnia's former Kinsmen Centre property is up for debate again Monday.
Sarnia Council is being asked to consider three options for the two acres at 656 Lakeshore Rd.
There are two subdivision plans, one for up to five urban residential lots fronting onto Lakeshore Rd. and the other for as many as nine.
The final option is to defer any rezoning applications until the city's Parks and Recreation Master Plan has been completed.
Mayor Mike Bradley would like to see a fourth option.
"The fourth option would look at rescinding the sale of the land, working with the Kinsmen organization and the neighbourhood who've come out very strongly with ideas and plans to redevelop that part of the park," says Bradley. "I think that's what community building is all about, listening to the public."
He says there has been overwhelming support for some sort of community facility on the property, which backs onto Baxter Park near Colborne Rd.
"I think that has to be respected. There's over 500 names on a petition," says Bradley. "There was over 100 people that came out to the public meeting and they're moving forward. I'm not just saying 'don't do something', but here's something that we can do that would make the community better."
The three recommended options all include demolition of the former elementary school next year and ask that citizen input and concepts received during the public engagement process be forwarded to the master plan process in 2018 to determine appropriate amenities for the park.
