'Fowl' Play Ruled Out In Canatara Park Incident

Sarnia police say no charges will be laid after three geese were struck while crossing Lake Chipican Dr. in Canatara Park on Sunday, June 25.

Constable John Sottosanti says the mature female driver of a stopped SUV didn't know the small goslings had wandered in front of her, as she had her eyes on oncoming traffic.

"It was especially busy in the park at the time because of a big car show," says Sottosanti. "The driver of the vehicle in question had stopped to allow traffic to turn in front of her. While she was waiting, small geese, unbeknownst to her, crossed her path and were directly in front of her. When she saw a clearing in traffic, she proceeded through."

Sottosanti says they also contacted federal and provincial ministries responsible for wildlife.

"Both agreed there appeared to be no intention on the driver's part and it was a true accident," he says. "The driver of the vehicle was extremely remorseful for what happened, so at this point, given all the information and the likelihood of a conviction, no charges have been laid."

Constable Sottosanti says it proves that things may not be as cut and dry as they originally appear to be.

The incident spawned a firestorm of accusations and negative comments on social media.
