Council Dumps Sarnia Transit Summer Schedule

Sarnia Transit users spoke and city council listened.

Regular route 9 service is expected to be reinstated by this Wednesday, after riders spent the month of July missing connections and waiting longer for buses to arrive.

The route was reduced on Canada Day after Sarnia council approved a new summer schedule in December as a cost saving measure.

Councillor Mike Kelch apologized for the previous decision.

"I guess what concerned me the most, other then the real people impacts that happened that none of us could have foreseen especially in the heat of a budget day, is the idea that we are undermining our own service that we've already invested a lot of money in," says Kelch. "We've invested in technology in those buses, we invested in good buses and then we've made a strategically not very good move that sort of undermined the bedrock that we've put in place over many years. So, I'm sorry for that."

Kelch also confirmed with his peers and staff that there will be no more changes to the route 9 service during the rest of this council term.

Over 300 people signed a petition opposing the service reduction, which saw one bus every 30 minutes instead of 15 and the hourly bus to Heritage Park available by request only.
