LGS Demolition Planned For Next Year

St. Clair Township is working closely with Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to make sure its concerns are addressed in advance of the planned demolition of the Lambton Generating Station.

OPG plans to award a contract for demolition of the site near Courtright in 2018.

Mayor Steve Arnold says OPG representatives will be speaking to township council in September.

He wants the site to be cleaned up for future community use.

"We've always said since 2003, when the possibility of the closure was first announced, that we want it as a greenfield site," says Arnold. "That's the way it started out, clean it up good enough that it becomes a greenfield site once again. I know that may be a lofty goal, but I don't think council has ever changed their mind in that direction."

OPG says the decommissioning of the site will save electricity customers $11-million.

LGS stopped burning coal in 2013 as part of the provincial government strategy to combat climate change.

In 2015, OPG held public meetings to discuss possible construction of an up to a 30-MW solar farm on the site, but plans never materialized.
