Work On Airport Eyesore Begins

After being an eyesore for about a year, the piles of dirt at Sarnia's Chris Hadfield Airport are being dealt with.

Around 35,000 to 40,000 cubic metres of riverbed sediment was dumped there last fall after being scooped out of Sarnia Harbour.

Chief Administrative Officer Manager Margaret Misek-Evans says the material has been tested and the Ministry of Environment has concluded that there are no further precautions that have to be taken with respect to the water from the material.

"The arrangements have been made with staff to get the materials graded and the leachate question has been dealt with," says Misek-Evans.

The soil is to be graded and seeded into a new berm at the airport.

The sub-contractor, OJD Trucking Ltd., began grading activities on Wednesday, September 13 with an expected completion date of September 22.

Further information, including costs, are expected to be released in an upcoming staff report.
