Canadian researchers want to determine what effect physical activity and mental and social stimulation have on those suffering from Alzheimers or other dementias.
Sarnia has been chosen as one of ten communities participating in a country-wide study.
Spokesperson Vanessa Barnes says they're looking for participants and their care givers and/or family members to take part in one of five, eight-week-long programs from now until the end of next June.
"The sessions consist of 45 to 60 minutes of physical activity," says Barnes. "Then we have a short break and then the second half consists of mental and social stimulating activities, different games and other things to get your brain going."
The first program is already underway and spots for two more to begin in January are going quickly.
"One begins January 10 in Sarnia and the other begins on January 11 in Petrolia," says Barnes. "We are very fortunate to be part of this study. We are hoping that after the funding, we are able to keep going."
There is a $20 registration fee for the program.
