Stricter Benzene Regulations Possible

The provincial Environment Ministry is proposing a new policy to that would take into consideration the cumulative impacts of benzene emissions in the Sarnia/Corunna area.

Environment Minister Chris Ballard says proposal would see the province consider the cumulative effects of benzene when deciding whether to grant industry the necessary environmental approvals needed for new and expanding facilities in Chemical Valley.

Under the proposal, enhanced air pollution controls could be required in new builds, even if the facility meets emission regulations, based on the levels of benzene in the area.

The World Health Organization says benzene exposure has been associated with adverse health effects including cancer.

Ecojustice client and Aamjiwnaang resident Ada Lockridge have been pushing for the change. The province has given no timeline for the proposed change.

The proposal is posted on the Environmental Bill of Rights Registry for a 90-day comment period.
