Outdoor New Years Eve Party Proposed

Plans are in the works for another New Years Eve party in Sarnia's downtown.

City Council will be asked on Monday to approve a noise by-law exemption, to allow Refined Fool to hold an outdoor celebration.

It would be held adjacent to the Davis St. brewery, between Christina St. and Julia St., from 8pm until 1am.

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley thinks it would be a great event.

"I think it's pretty exciting, because people are always looking for something to do on New Years Eve," says Bradley. "To be able to come to downtown Sarnia, it'll be a boost for all of the restaurants and night clubs so that's a really positive step forward. It's been the vision of different Sarnia councils dating back to the mid 90's to have Sarnia's downtown as a cultural and entertainment centre, and it's happening big time."

Mayor Bradley notes a crowd of 10,000 was orderly during a New Years party to celebrate the city's centennial in 2014. Only three arrests were made that night.

The noise by-law exemption is conditional on Refined Fool employing two on duty Sarnia police officers and one cruiser.

Tommy Douglas will voice his concerns during Monday's meeting.

He says tenants in his seniors building have experienced distress in the past when similar events were held.
