Christmas Safety Tips From The Sarnia Police

Sarnia police say don't make yourself a target for thieves this Christmas.

Constable John Sottosanti says break and enters are usually a crime of opportunity, so make sure windows and doors are always locked.

He says it's not unusual for thieves to target or "stalk" specific homes.

"We're also asking people that if you do get gifts, different electronics, cell phones and such, don't be throwing your boxes out and allowing people to see exactly what you got," says Sottosanti. "Either disperse them over time into your garbage or turing the boxes inside out so people aren't aware exactly what you received for Christmas and decide to come back at a later time and break into your house potentially."

Constable Sottosanti says if you are going to be gone over the holidays or on vacation, don't advertise it on social media, wait until you're back to post your pictures online.
