After winning provincial authorization nearly a year ago, Sarnia's Walmart store is now selling beer and cider.
Aaron Zimmer was the first person to make a purchase at a specially designated checkout lane at 9am Friday.
He says have your proof of age ready.
"Every cashier must have Smart Serve to sell beer and whether you're 19 or 90, you have to show your ID," says Zimmer. "So don't go to Walmart if you're a 40-year-old and think you're just going to walk out with beer. I had to show mine and I'm 44."
Sarnia's Walmart was one of 76 new independent and large grocery stores province-wide authorized to sell beer and cider in May of 2017.
The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) that represents LCBO workers is strongly opposed to the expansion of sales to grocery stores.
