Deadline For Bike Lane Input Extended

Significant public interest in Sarnia's bike lane program has prompted the city to extend the public feedback period.

Over 100 people attended a recent public meeting, and they've received over 100 comments.

An initial proposal called for Colborne Rd. to be reduced to three lanes, with a bike lane going from Lakeshore Rd. to Capel St. in both directions.

A portion of Cathcart Blvd. would also be equipped with a bike lane to get to Canatara Park, and an undetermined route south of Exmouth St.

Manager of Development and Transportation David Jackson says there's now an alternative being pitched as well.

"Originally we proposed adding bike lanes and removing one lane of parking," says Jackson. "The new proposal is generally adding "sharrows", which is that kind of bike symbol on to the road and cyclists would share the road with vehicles and the road would generally remain as it is now."

Those interested can provide feedback at www.smartsarnia.com until April 27.

A report will be presented at Sarnia's city council meeting on May 7.
