An eight-year reforestation project in St. Clair Township is complete.
A partnership between Enbridge and the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority has seen the redevelopment of 34 hectares of land.
Authority Conservation Services Manager Steve Shaw says the project's completion is timely because Lambton County only has half the tree cover recommended.
"The multiphase Lambton County Naturalization Project has seen the creation of approximately one hectare of wetlands next to Bear Creek, the establishment of two hectares of tallgrass prairie habitat over underground pipelines, and the reforestation of 31 hectares with the planting of more than 62,000 trees," says Shaw.
He says to mark the completion of the project, 17 Enbridge staff joined their forestry specialists to hand plant 900 seedlings on one of the properties near Wilkesport.
"Just the value of the land itself that Enbridge has contributed toward these naturalization projects is a big thing," says Shaw. "We can have all the trees we can get but if we don't have any place to plant them we're at a standstill."
Shaw says much of the tree cover in that area was destroyed by the Emerald Ash Borer.
