Sarnia police are again reminding residents to put their phones away while behind the wheel. During a two day blitz on Wednesday and Thursday, officers issued 43 tickets for distracted driving.
Of the 43 drivers charged, 16 were female and 27 were male. The youngest driver was 17 and the oldest driver was 79.
Fifteen additional tickets were also handed out for various offences under The Highway Traffic Act.
Sarnia police are reminding drivers that “hands-free driving” means hands on the steering wheel – not on your phone. This includes being stopped at a red light, stop sign or traffic jam.
If you need to use your cell phone, pull off the road or use a device that allows your phone to operate hands-free.
The offence of driving with a hand-held communication device or hand-held entertainment device is $490 and a gain of three demerit points.
