Damage is estimated at $375,000 following a cottage fire on Fawn Island south of Sombra Sunday, May 27.
St. Clair Township Fire Chief Walt Anderson says between 30 and 40 firefighters from three stations responded after the call came in at around 10:30pm.
"The Fawn Island Association has a ferry and when there is a call for any emergency services response team, the ferry goes to the dock and waits for us," says Chief Anderson. "It transported our men and portable pumps, hoses and air packs to the island. Every house has water access so we put our hoses into the river and we have an endless supply of water then."
Chief Anderson says water can be drawn from the St. Clair River with portable pumps to fight fires on the island.
Sunday night's fire began in the rear of the building but the exact cause has not been determined yet.
