Ontario Progressive Conservative Leader Doug Ford detailed his plans for ratepayer relief at a campaign stop near Wyoming Wednesday morning.
Ford and Sarnia-Lambton MPP Bob Bailey sat down with members of the Reid family at their dining room table at Reid's Farm Market on Oil Heritage Rd.
Ford declared a PC government will save the average family $173 a year on their hydro bill and $222 on the price of gasoline.
He promises to scrap the carbon tax and Green Energy Act, reduce gas prices by 10 cents a litre, lower hydro rates by 12%, and provide tax relief to the lower and middle class.
"The carbon tax does nothing for the environment. The Green Energy Act is the biggest scam [the Liberals] have ever created," says Ford. "It drives up hydro costs, and it's just unfair to businesses and it's unfair to the people of this province."
Ford's largely un-costed plan also pledges to create 15,000 new long-term care beds over the next five years and adding $3.8-billion, including matching federal funding, for mental health, addictions and housing.
The PC leader visited Sarnia-Lambton on the same day as NDP Leader Andrea Howarth who had a second campaign stop planned in Sarnia-Lambton in support of candidate Kathy Alexander.
With public opinion polls suggesting the New Democrats are surging ahead in the popular vote in the province, Ford was asked if he's worried about the riding turning orange this election.
"I don't believe so. I think there's a great community here and they understand what would happen if it ever went orange," says Ford. "They have the best representative that fights for them with Bob Bailey. He's been elected numerous times over the years and there's a reason for that."
Bailey was first elected in 2007 and is seeking a fourth term.
In the last provincial election in 2014, Bailey and the PC's won with 41.1% of the vote over NDP candidate Brian White's 35.7%.
