Repair and restoration work at the Lochiel Kiwanis Centre has turned into a bigger project than expected.
Property Manager Vince Wijsman says it was discovered that enclosed support beams, that run through the parapet below the roof line, had completely rotted out due to many years of water infiltration.
He says the work will take an extra two to three weeks to complete.
"It took the job from repair and restoration to totally dismantling the east and north section of the parapet wall, so they're basically rebuilding it," says Wijsman.
An emergency purchase order for an additional $57,000 was issued to Bill Dokter Masonry for the work.
Wijsman says an extra $16,000 was issued to Skyway Canada Limited for additional support clamps to prevent the parapet from falling on workers and the public below during the duration of the project.
The money will be paid out of the Lochiel Kiwanis Major Maintenance budget.
