Rules Set For New Bike Lanes In Sarnia

Cyclists in Sarnia can rejoice.

Bike lanes are, or have already been installed on  Russell St., Capel St., Colborne Rd., and Cathcart Blvd.

Manager of Development and Transportation David Jackson says the new lanes will make it easier and safer for cyclists to get from A to B.

"They'll be a designated bike lane on the side of the road that's solely for the use of cyclists, so vehicles can't stop or park in that zone," he says. "So it creates a safe space for them, and encourages cyclists to use the road rather than the sidewalk."

Jackson says the bike lanes will also benefit motorists.

"People won't have to pass a cyclist if they're on the road. Now it keeps the cyclist in their own lane so drivers don't have to worry about passing them. It also keeps the cyclist more visible too so the drivers can see them," he says.

Jackson says the project should be fully complete within 2 weeks.

The rule of law states vehicles need to give cyclists at least one metre of space. Jackson says the new bike lanes will help the two stay apart.

Service vehicles like buses and garbage trucks can temporarily block a bike lane.
