Police Remind Cyclists Of Rules Of The Road

A 30-year-old Sarnia woman was fined $110 after she rode through the crosswalk at the intersection of Wellington St. and Murphy Rd. at around 11pm Friday.

She hit a car, flew over the handlebars and shattered the windshield, but was not seriously hurt.

Sarnia police Constable John Sottosanti reminds cyclists they must obey the rules of the road.

"Cyclists are reminded that they must dismount and walk their bike across a crosswalk," says Sottosanti. "If they don't, they run the risk of being charged, and if they do so, and are in a collision, the responsibility rests with the cyclist in that case."

Constable Sottosanti says motorists must give cyclists a metre of clearance and not cross into, or park in newly installed bike lanes.
