Community Resources Pooled At Pathways

The therapeutic pool at Pathways Health Centre for Children in Sarnia is holding water again after a successful repair job.

The well-used pool has been shut down for eight months after it was discovered over the Christmas holidays that it was losing water beneath the main drain.

Executive Director Jenny Greensmith says they've tested the operating systems and the pool has passed inspection.

"It is a temporary solution," says Greensmith. "The pressure testing had already been done before we began to fill the pool and as we filled we didn't notice any more leaks, which is good news, and then we also needed to start the pumps again. All the systems tested out. We had to fix a few seals on gaskets, but basically, we are good to go."

She says they'll be open for fall programming, with registration through the Pathways website beginning this Saturday, September 1.

"It's a new online registration system and as always our pool supervisor is at the end of the phone to give advice to anybody who is the slightest bit concerned about doing registration online," says Greensmith. "We can help walk them through it."

Greensmith says the repairs cost about $100,000.

The money was raised through a community campaign.

Greensmith says the formal part of their capital campaign to ensure the pool's long-term future, will be launched by the new year.

A complete refurbishment of the pool's 30-year-old infrastructure and surrounding pool area is estimated to cost $1.5-million.
