City Police Attending Funeral For Slain Port Huron Officer

A delegation of city police officers, including Sarnia's chief and deputy chief, is attending Friday's regimental funeral for a slain Port Huron police officer.

Joel Wood, 45, was shot and killed, while he was off duty, early last Friday morning in Clyde Township, Michigan.

Chief Norm Hansen says they like to show their support whenever they can.

"We sent two officers out to Fredericton," says Hansen. "It's a reminder to all of us that it can happen anywhere and anytime. The lieutenant in Port Huron was a 22-year member, and our service and Port Huron often work hand in hand. We help each other with parades and we help each other with ceremonies, so we certainly feel the loss that they're feeling."

He expects thousands of emergency responders will attend.

"It's quite a sight. It's a sad day and a bad reason to all get-together, but when you see all of the uniforms -- usually from across North America -- it's very touching."

Funeral services at Colonial Woods Missionary Church on Pine Grove Ave. in Port Huron start at noon.

Fredericton police constables Robb Costello and Sara Burns were killed in the line of duty earlier this month, in New Brunswick.
