Suspect arrested after dramatic crash, struggle with police

A 46-year-old Windsor man faces numerous charges, including impaired driving by drug, following a dramatic single-vehicle crash in Sarnia Wednesday.

Around 3 p.m. officers responded to the area of Cardiff Drive and Overlea Crescent, where witnesses reported that a car had crashed through a fence and a carport.

Cst. Nelson Amaral said witnesses pointed out a man walking away from the crash scene as being the driver. He said when the driver was approached, he allegedly raised his fist, threatened the officer and then mumbled incomprehensible words.

"The officer noticed that the male was sweating profusely, his eyelids were blinking rapidly and he was swaying while standing which led the officer to believe that the driver was impaired," said Amaral.

Amaral said there was a struggle on the ground and further threats to assault the officer were allegedly made before the man was eventually handcuffed and taken to hospital.

Lloyd Eldon Campbell is now charged with impaired driving by drug, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, resisting arrest and two counts of breach of probation.

Amaral said blood samples were obtained from the driver and sent to Health Canada for analysis as the investigation continues.

Anyone with information or who witnessed the incident is asked to call Sarnia police Cst. Jeremy Wilde at 519-344-8861 ext. 6232.
