Sarnia's paediatric division at Bluewater Health has received a unique donation that's sure to put a smile on young patients' faces.

The Fight Like Mason Foundation has provided staff in the Maternal Infant Child Unit with ten, brightly coloured, customized IV poles, that display a variety of different characters and superhero symbols.

"Mason's Power Poles" were created by Windsor parents Iain Macri and Chantelle Bacon in memory of their four-year-old son Mason Bacon-Macri who lost his battle to cancer in 2016.

Bacon said they initially made the poles to make their son's palliative care environment less intimidating and scary, but were inspired to make more for children in the Windsor area and now Sarnia.

She said they hope the equipment lift spirits for children in Sarnia fighting health battles.

"You see them walking down the hallway now, proud with their Mason's Power Poles, and it's just amazing to see that smile and to see them so proud of their battles -- no matter what they're in for," said Bacon.

Macri said they really focused on making the medical equipment fun and inviting.

"To our surprise, this had never been done before," said Macri. "So, we're the proud owners of this unique invention and we're so happy to give it back to all the children fighting. Our son was a superhero and we want each kid to feel like a superhero and have the strength within to fight their own illness head-on -- just like our son did."

Bluewater Health is the first hospital outside of Windsor- Essex to receive the poles.
