Guarding against the Grinch at Christmas

Sarnia police say don't make yourself a target for thieves this Christmas.

Cst. John Sottosanti said break and enters are usually a crime of opportunity, so make sure windows and doors are always locked.

He said if you want to keep the expensive television you received for Christmas, don't let everyone know you got one.

"When you're disposing of the boxes, don't just simply throw them to the curb as is," said Sottosanti. "Take the time to cut them and fold them over so you have the blank side facing out. That way, individuals can't immediately tell what you have and that temptation is decreased."

Cst. Sottosanti also says if you are going to be gone over the holidays on vacation, don't advertise it on social media and wait until you're back to post your pictures online.
