Clean up crews tackled a site along the Howard Watson Nature Trail in Sarnia on Thursday morning.
Manager of Parks Forestry and Horticulture Patti Ross said they were alerted to photos circulating on social media of what appear to be a makeshift living quarters on the popular trail.
"The police accompanied us, we went to the trail and we picked up what we could, took down the tarps and dismantled the makeshift living arrangements," said Ross. "There was nobody there. We did what we can, a lot of it is still frozen to the ground so we'll return and clean the rest up at a later date."
Ross said anyone who comes across anything along the trail that doesn't belong there, should contact the city.
She said those who do use the trail are reminded to take your garbage with you, pack it in, pack it out.
Sarnia police said the tents were found to be underwater and it's obvious nobody has been there for quite some time.
