The Sarnia Sting blew a two-goal lead in the third period Thursday night to fall to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 5-4 in overtime.
Colton Kammerer gave Sarnia a 4-2 lead with just over eight minutes left in regulation, but three unanswered Soo goals, including the OT winner by Keeghan Howdeshell, gave the Greyhounds the extra point.
Sting Assistant Coach Brad Staubitz said the Soo were simply the better team in the final frame.
"There was times where we in control of it, but I think it really came down to the third period. I thought they really outplayed us, and you could see they pushed their way back into it and got that goal late in overtime," said Staubitz. "As a whole, we need to work on that. We've had problems with that on and off throughout the season and it's been talked about how to control and manage a game. I think we're just losing too many one-on-one battles in the third."
Sarnia forwards Ryan McGregor and Hugo Leufvenius each had a goal and an assist in this one, and Ethan Langevin stopped 33 of the 38 shots he faced in goal for the Sting.
Sarnia is back in action Saturday night in Hamilton.
