County urges help for homeless in cold

The County of Lambton has asked that residents have a watchful eye for those who may be homeless Tuesday night.

A low of -21 C, -6 F is expected with a dangerous overnight wind chill of -34 C, -29 F.

Lambton's Medical Officer of Health has issued its third cold weather alert of the season, and Environment Canada has an extreme cold warning in effect.

General Manager of Social Services Valerie Colasanti says if you see a vulnerable person who is open to assistance, you can direct them to the Good Shepherd's Lodge -- at 950 Confederation Street.

"Although the lodge is experiencing full capacity right now, the staff are willing and able to work with everyone who may be experiencing homelessness," said Colasanti.

She said if the person's behaviour poses an immediate safety concern to themselves or others, call 9-1-1.

A new record cold temperature could be set Wednesday, the current record for January 30 is -21.7 C set in 1966.

Conditions should improve Friday as milder air moves into the region.
