It's hoped new pre-clearance technology at truck inspection stations across Ontario will improve highway safety, including along the approach to the Blue Water Bridge.
A new mobile app called Drivewyze will allow trucks with good safety records to bypass stops.
The technology automatically looks for safety defects like tire, wheel and brake failures and overweight loads.
Transport Minister Jeff Yurek said, as a result, many truckers won't be rushing to deliver orders if they fall behind.
"With this change, and also our change that allows truckers to use electronic logs, it really streamlines the process so that drivers can just focus on safe driving and not having to worry about time limits being interfered with by the inspection processes, " he said.
Yurek said trucking associations are supportive of the new technology.
The app is being tested at four Ontario crossings this year, and it's hoped it will be fully implemented after the pilots are complete.
